The Mismeasure Of ManThe Mismeasure Of Man  by Stephen Jay Gould.
This is a great book any way you look at it. It is a collection of longish essays, all about how great scientists of the past managed to work the prejudices of their times into the supposedly objective, scientific studies they were doing. It discusses everything from phrenology to various (skewed attempts to prove the rankings of the races or genders, to how IQ tests were misused to set quotas on certain immigrants, leading to (among other things) many European Jews being unable to leave Nazi-occupied territory because the US had reached its limit on "inferior" Eastern Europeans. It doesn't let modern scientists off the hook, either -- while showing how scientists thought (were SURE) that their studies were unbiased and scientific, he also talks about how some modern scientists can easily fall into the same sorts of errors. - submitted by Kim Powell

The Secret GardenThe Secret Garden   by Frances Hodgson Burnett.
A story of a young girl who must find strength within herself, which draws on some non-Western culture. - submitted by Mary Reeves.

A Gebra Named AlA Gebra Named Al   by Wendy Isdell.
A wonderful fantasy, in the spirit of Flatland and The Phantom Tollbooth, about the mythical lands of Science and Mathematics. Julie, who is struggling with algebra in school, finds herself in a world where the objects of mathematics and science are real. It is delightful to read, plus it was written by a gifted eighth grader and published when she was in high school. I strongly recommend that all of you read it. - submitted by Mary Reeves.
