Dr. George Middleton, 1923-2008
George Middleton, Jr, PhD passed away on April 27th, 2008 at his home in Lake Charles, LA, age 85. Dr. Middleton was born on February 26th, 1923 in Houston, TX and was the beloved husband of Margaret “Jackie” MacLean Middleton for the past 54 years. Dr. Middleton earned his BA from Birmingham-Southern College in 1948, his MA from the University of Alabama in 1951, and his PhD in Clinical Psychology from Pennsylvania State University in 1958. Dr. Middleton served as a professor of special education and then psychology at McNeese State University from 1958 to 1974. During his time at McNeese Dr. Middleton founded the Summer Enrichment Program for gifted students in 1959, which became a statewide program, the Governor’s Program for Gifted Children in 1964. Dr. Middleton served as the Director of the Governor’s Program from 1964 until his death. Dr. Middleton also served as a psychological consultant to the Calcasieu Parish School Board as well as Charter Hospital, in addition to conducting a private practice in clinical psychology and neuropsychology. Dr. Middleton belonged to many professional societies and served as the President of the Louisiana Psychological Association from 1973-1974.
Dr. Middleton is survived by his wife Margaret, and his nieces and nephews Sally Pritchept of Fayetteville, GA, John and Margaret Pritchept of Florence SC, and Dr. Peter and Susan Pritchept of Montrose CO. He is also survived by his extended family of dear friends and legion of “gifties.”
A memorial service will be held in his honor on Thursday, May 1st, 2008 at 5 PM at Johnson Funeral Home, after a visitation which will be held from 3 to 5. A scholarship fund has been set up in Dr. Middleton’s honor through the Friends of the Governor’s Program. Donations to this fund or the charity of your choice are preferred.
